Kiln-Dried Hardwood Logs
Before ordering Hardwood Logs we ask you to consider our Larch Logs.
Most Firewood suppliers in Scotland have had difficulty getting hardwoods. They usually have to be imported at up to twice the price they were 2 years ago.
WHAT KILN-DRYING REALLY MEANS
We have to burn 30% of our firewood timber to kiln-dry the other 70%
Kiln-Drying is both wasteful and environmentally unsustainable, with kilns burning 24 hours a day.
Our Air-Dried Logs are exactly the same logs as the Kiln-Dried Logs - one lot are dried in a kiln and the other air-dried in our polytunnels using sun and wind (Mother Natures Kiln) and both end up under 20% moisture and are both Woodsure Approved.
Hardwood vs Softwood: The Real Story
The idea that hardwoods are inherently "better" than softwoods for burning is more tradition than truth. When logs are properly dried (typically to below 20% moisture), both hardwood and softwood offer similar calorific value per kilo. That means, pound for pound, they release comparable energy. The difference lies in density, not energy content. Larch is the hardest of the Softwoods, saving of over 25% on the price of Air-Dried Hardwoods and 33% on Kiln-Dried Hardwoods, making our Air-Dried Larch Logs our best value for money. They are also much more sustainable than hardwoods.
