Import Note About Our Hardwood Logs in Winter

Important information about hardwood logs bought at this time of year.

Product Details

Throughout autumn and winter the outside humidity is as high as 90% and this affects our seasoned hardwood logs which are stored and dried naturally in large potato storage boxes outside. They were perfectly dry in early October but are now starting to re-absorb the moisture from the air.

The best time to buy hardwoods is in the summer months especially during our summer sale when we discount them by about 20%. Our wetter, warmer climate is now making it very difficult to properly dry the hardwoods leaving them prone to mould growth etc. (To encourage you, we have discounted our Pine and Larch Logs which are perfectly dry and burn just as well as the hardwoods and are proving to be an excellent wood fuel.)

However, if you still wish to place an order for hardwoods it is important to understand that they are well seasoned and will have a low cellular moisture content but may appear damp and will require to be stored correctly and 'finished off' before burning.

Our Giant Builders bags are made from a ventilated mesh material so this helps with the drying. However, you must remove them from the bag immediately after delivery and store them in a dry well ventilated area.

Always stack them properly with the first row facing one way and the second row at right angles to the first and so on up the stack. This allows the maximum airflow to travel through the logs. If you stack them all the same way then they will most certainly start to sweat and become too damp for burning.

'A dry airy environment' is somewhere you could hang wet washing and it would be dry by the end of the day. Very often a garage or shed is not an ideal place. An outside log store is by far the best - see our section on logstores and our Toptex material that will allow you to make a cheap but effective logstore from 4 or 5 old pallets.

Always bring the logs into the house beside your stove or fire at least 48 hours before burning. You can speed this process up by splitting the logs into smaller pieces if required.

If you are in any doubt we would suggest that you mix our logs with our various briquettes or oak barrel pieces. This will guarantee a good fire.

If you depend on logs for heating it is always best to buy your logs before the end of the summer when they are as dry as they can possibly be and are available at discounted prices.

Better still consider our best buy Larch and Pine Logs:-
